This one is a sweet find! It was sent to me by Lois Rodgers for the #griefheart project. I have never seen a heart so perfect in a cantaloupe. So even the cantaloupes are giving me permission to grieve.
That might be a stretch. Or even sort of crazy that someone else’s fruit would be speaking to me and giving me permission for anything. But Charles would love this one because it’s so off the wall. Either that or he’d make fun of me for being corny and somehow twist the story in a way that would have me laugh until I … Read more...
Randy used to read Charles the book, “Love you to the Moon and Back.” When he picked up his phone last week and typed in his password, there it was in his face. It took his breath away because he had not even thought about that book and had not looked it up. I smiled and told him he’d gotten his first “sign” from Charles.
I was stumped until today on how to illustrate the concept of a moon and a heart when I saw the swiss cheese in our refrigerator. Even though he’s … Read more...
This is my 4th of July whipped cream pie. Charles loved whipped cream like I did. Some of you had kids that drank from the milk carton. Not Charles. He sprayed whipped cream directly into his mouth.
Today my heart felt whipped and beaten. There are just days it feels that way.
Some days you get a break and relief from the grief. I try and not make myself feel guilty because I know that wave and heaviness will be back so I make a point to enjoy the break.
With this heart, I framed the word effervescent. Hard to see but that’s what Charles was. His engaging personality made it hard to believe he suffered from depression.
You know the old saying about sticks and stones may break your bones but words can never hurt you. Mean words hurt as much as sticks and stones.
So many suicides by young people are attributed to hatefulness by others. People don’t typically kill themselves for one reason alone, but it is sad that so many end their lives from accumulative pressure of not feeling like they measure up.
I wrote this and a friend of mine whose daughter died by suicide posted this just yesterday.
My tired heart appreciated a gift today from grief supporter, Terri Norman who sent this heart shaped weight.
Often I do go from happy heart to heavy heart in a flash and this one says that to me. Funny, I have the rest of you seeing hearts everywhere and thinking of this project. I hope the grief is not contagious!
I went to a grand opening of a video production house and I spotted this picture on the wall. Just ran right into it.
While I didn’t feel that way by that evening I was struck by how perfectly it illustrated how I felt when I got up in the morning. Funny how I turn around and see these staring in my face now. Were they there before and I didn’t notice them?
A late birthday present from my oldest and dearest friend, Martha Carroll Bloom. (We are always fashionably late with gifts.)
“Dearest Anne Moss, I saw this heart and decided to donate it to your #griefheart project. The artist cried when I told her where the heart was going. Here’s praying you continue to put the pieced of your heart back together–one stitch at a time. Lots of love, Martha.”
The #griefheart project gives us permission to grieve, honor and remember our loved ones that died by suicide.
I saw this on our hike Sunday down by the river. I don’t believe in spray painting trees but here it was in our path already painted so I had to take a picture.
Charles must have been with us on this hike and given this tree a hug. It just made me feel good to see it and I took it as a sign.
Sometimes it does feel like a hole has been burned in my heart. While that hole will never be completely filled, I believe it can heal. Giving back and being part of something bigger than yourself is part of that process.
Charles may have died but my love for him never will. It burns eternal in my soul.
From Charles:
“So play this when your day is gray when hope is dim
When happiness is growing slim
Listen to me rap then reverse the grim
Burn the hurt, let my words do the work”
Charles loved the bizarre. The odder it was, the better. From the jokes he told to the raps he wrote, he saw the world from a unique viewpoint. Which is what made him so special.
I have to wonder about the artist that created this. Nobody normal cooks up an iron pig with a heart, right? Just the sort of crazy, creative $#(+ Charles would invent if he happened to be into sculpture. His suicide ended what would have been a most interesting journey. I miss that so much–his alternative view of the world.
Even though I’ve suffered the most devastating loss of my life, I can never lose hope. And for those who suffer suicidal thoughts, or have a loved one who does, please don’t let that last shred of hope ever escape.
