SPEAKING: 2019 PAS, Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting

I will be part of the presentation team with Lisa Horowitz, PhD from National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Jeff Bridge PhD from The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. My part of the presentation is focused on story and utilizing social media and content marketing to prevent suicide.

Session Title

Detecting and Managing Suicide Risk in Medical and School Settings: Turning Research into Real World Practice

Session Type

Hot Topic/Topic Symposia: Addresses issues and controversies around topics of interest to more specialized audiences. As such, these symposia focus on more specific topics than State of the Art Plenary sessions. Hot Topic/Topic Symposia generally include 3-4 presentations with time for active audience discussion.

Session Goal

The goal of this session is to discuss how research studies in suicide prevention, screening and management were translated into practical applications that can be utilized in the medical and school settings. We will present on

Session Schedule

  1. Presentation of the Clinical Pathways for Ed/inpatient Med Surg/ Outpatient setting – Lisa Horowitz, PhD, NIMH (20 min)
    •  The Youth Suicide Risk Clinical Pathway, utilizing the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) developed for the pediatric ED, and validated on the inpatient medical/surgical unit and in the outpatient primary care setting
    • Discussion of suicide risk screening and the inadequacy of depression screens to detect suicide risk in primary care
  2. Signs of Suicide – Managing risk of suicide in the schools – Jeff Bridge, PhD (20 min)
    • Data and teachings from the Signs of Suicide (SOS) school suicide prevention program
  3. Depression screening and Suicide risk in primary care pediatric settings – John (20 min)
  4. Anne Moss Rogers Story mother/advocate for screening in medical settings (20 min) -11:45 AM to 12:10 PM 
    • A suicide loss survivor, Anne Moss Rogers, will present on leveraging social media for suicide prevention. We will also conduct a brief interview with mother advocate, Ms. Rogers, whose son died by suicide and her mission to help pediatric clinicians implement effective suicide risk screening programs. Topics discussed will include: suicide risk instruments and clinical pathways, suicide prevention in the school system, depression vs. suicide risk screening, social media and suicide prevention, and future directions.
  5. John Interviewing Anne Moss (20 min)
  6. Active panel discussion, questions, comments (20 min)

Session Objectives

  1. Recognize suicide as a national and global public health threat and implications for suicide prevention in medical settings
  2. Discuss youth suicide risk clinical pathways that can be implemented in emergency departments, inpatient medical surgical units and outpatient primary care settings.
  3. Describe implementation science around the clinical management of the patient who screens positive for suicide risk in the medical and school settings.
  4. Understand the use of social media and its role in suicide prevention
