New York Times: The Family Foundation School

Not long ago, I was interviewed by Michael Wilson for an article for the New York Times. He was investigating the Family Foundation School, the therapeutic boarding school where Charles attended in 2012. A teacher in New York had died from overdose in the bathroom who had attended the school which left bread crumbs back to the Family School.

Charles was the coolest and most unique person I have ever met

I remember my first night at the Family School, a therapeutic boarding school I attended in upstate New York and where I first met Charles.  I was very uncomfortable on how I was sent there. My mother had just died and my dad didn’t know what to do with me.

Scared But Hopeful

My son is 22 years old and suffers from bipolar disorder (mainly depression), anxiety, ADHD and substance abuse. He was only 9 years old when he tried to jump off a balcony and we sought help. We actually had him as inpatient in a Baltimore top-rated hospital in the nation.

They sent him home a week later with parenting advice and a sticker chart.

I wish I were kidding. He was suicidal and they gave me a sticker chart? What? Are you serious? This was 2005. They did absolutely nothing to help us. Nothing.
