There are four traits that Put Kids at Risk of Substance Misuse and in January 2019, VCU Institute of Drug & Alcohol Studies with Beacon Tree Foundation, won the VCU CCTR Endowment Fund to implement Preventure, a personality-targeted life skills training program that has been shown to reduce drug and alcohol use in schools by up to 80%.

The pilot study, the first in the US, will include four Virginia … Read more...

Preventure Training in Richmond, Virginia!

Sign up for Preventure Training

I have been working with Dr. Vassileva and Dr. Conrod in Canada for 1.5 years to get this Preventure training to Richmond. This is the program that has been shown to reduce drug and alcohol use in schools by 30-80% at three year follow up.

The intervention was included in the landmark surgeon general’s report on addiction in 2017, this New York Times article and this article in Richmond Family Magazine that was the #1 article of all time for that publication. This program reduces drug and alcohol use by targeting personality traits that have … Read more...

Now that we have the funds and the approval from two schools, next up is planning the training. There are a lot of things to get together to make Preventure happen. Thanks for all your support.

I like this program because it focuses on both substance use and mental illness traits. In short, Preventure is an evidence-based school program associated with 30-80% reduction in adolescent substance use. This intervention focuses on teaching teens coping strategies to manage personality traits that predispose them to addiction and associated high risk behaviors.

Personality traits that predispose one to addiction include:

  • Sensation seeking

Preventure at one more school in Richmond, VA?

VCU and Beacon Tree will be resubmitting the PreVenture grant to NIH in November. Big grants take a long time and we had to make some changes per the NIH review.

While we wait, we might as well get the ball rolling and implement Preventure at one more school through Beacon Tree. Hanover County, VA is doing one school now, with a grant they got from ABC. That makes them the first in the US. There are two potential schools on the radar. I’ve spoken to one but open to others. Approval will need to happen fast since we … Read more...

Can you do something now to prevent young children from becoming addicts later?

I knew at an early age that Charles had the predisposition for substance abuse disorder. I was, however, unaware of a family history of depression and anxiety. And until recently, I never knew any family members had attempted suicide.

The diagnosis of ADHD apparently increases the risk of illegal drug use by three times and Charles had that. So already, he was in a high risk category.

At the point I started to feel he was the type to get into drugs later, I thought I could change that course and I dove head first into that cause. Given the … Read more...

You guys shared the article ‘Can addiction be prevented?‘ so much, Richmond Family Magazine reported back that their visitation had increased by FIVE HUNDRED PERCENT that month. You rock! Your hyper-sharing was certainly appreciated.

Because you shared so much, it got ranked on Google and we received messages from all over about Preventure, the new solution to adolescent drug and alcohol prevention for which we had been soliciting letters of support. I heard from Ohio, Arizona, Maryland and the Caribbean and I had a call with another mental health advocate and the attorney general’s office in Ohio. … Read more...

Implementing Preventure

I sold my partnership in my business to focus on mental illness and addiction advocacy full time. Left a successful career to work at a free job. Why?

Virginia ranks 39th for mental health care. Even worse, 49th for treatment of major depression for those 18 and under. That is utterly pathetic. If I want it to change, I have to do something about it. So I am. My son Charles is not just a statistic. He was my son and he died by suicide as a result of addiction and depression.

With a grant, the soonest we’d be able … Read more...
