Where

Virginia State University
1 Hayden St, Petersburg, VA , 23806

Event Type

I will start with the story of my son’s depression, addiction and death by suicide and talk about how I coped with the grief.  Then we will focus on listening with empathy, defining negative and positive coping strategies (soft skills) which segues into a guided facilitation to help students identify what coping strategies might work for them. The overall theme is creating a culture of connection to prevent suicide and other negative coping strategies to help students to identify ways to work through adversity without relying on substances or self harm.

I’ll be telling my story and then focusing on these three skills in particular.

  • Problem Solving
  • Flexibility/Adaptability
  • Listening with empathy

The presentation is: Interactive, includes video, authentic

My main theme is always to help students foster a culture of connection to minimize substance misuse, prevent suicide,  and promote healthy coping strategies.
