SUMMARY:PRESENTATION: Suicide Screening: Are we asking the right questions?
 \, iCal
DESCRIPTION:Suicide Screening\, Dr. Lisa Horowitz\nAudience: The medical c
ommunity and interested parties which can be parents\, teachers\, foundati
ons and any organization that works with children.\n REGISTER \nDescript
ion: Dr. Lisa Horowitz with the National Institute of Mental Health will d
iscuss her research on the feasibility of implementing a routine suicide r
isk assessment for youth using a 4 question screening administered at thei
 r pediatrician or primary care provider’s office.\n\nSuicide is the #2 c
ause of death for 15-35 year olds and Dr. Horowitz results show evidence t
hat this tool can accurately identify kids at risk before thoughts become
acts.\n\nAs President of Beacon Tree Foundation I will also be telling my
personal story of losing my son to suicide and sharing some of her insi
ghts as a mental health advocate.\n\nThis will also be an opportunity for
the medical community to make requests of our non-profit\, Beacon Tree. We
often get questions on referring out for psychological resources and we c
an help you find those resources for your practice.\n\nGoal: Beacon Tree
Foundation\, advocates for youth mental health\, in partnership with NIMH\
, wants to implement this suicide screening tool in all pediatric and pri
mary care practices across the state. Parents are unlikely to spot signs o
f suicide until after an attempt or a completed suicide. Screening at a ph
ysician's practice is one way we can flag kids that need help before it ha
ppens.\n\nDr. Ted Abernathy has been using the ASQ intervention to success
fully identify at-risk youth for suicide for over a year. See more about
the life-saving ASQ screening tool here.\n\nBosher Hall which is on the fi
rst floor. Coming in from the parking deck\, it's one of the rooms on the
left right after you walk in.\n Get more info on the ASQ Screening\n&nbsp
