Happy 25th birthday to my son in heaven

If Charles was still with us, he’d have grand birthday plans. The pandemic we are in right now would have forced him to change the celebration. But he would have found a creative way around it. I wonder what that would have been.

Charles loved parties. Loved people.

He would talk about his birthday plans in January like the party would be happening the next week. It drove me nuts because he was hyperfocused on it and it was so important to him.

Because he exhausted me daily with party details months in advance, one time I laughed and said … Read more...

No one is too busy

This was one of my son, Charles’, last tweets.

I’ve thought about it a lot over the last few years since his death by suicide. I sit with it sometimes and let it marinate. Charles was never too busy for his family and friends. We were always a top priority. That’s just who he was and what I loved most about him.

He didn’t understand that not everyone else was like this.

For the last year, I’ve seen humans get busier and busier to the point that no one was paying attention to one another, only on their own goals. … Read more...

My book is featured on the Virginia Library Website

I hope you will allow me a braggy moment. Book sales tend to sag when I’m not speaking at conferences so this was a welcome surprise.

When libraries in Virginia are open again, people will be able to check the book out of the library. And it’s nice to be featured and you can see it here.

If you’ve read the book, please leave a review and recommend it to a friend who needs it. My heart and soul is between those book covers.

If you’ve not read it, here’s where you can find it.

Book signing was a success

Hosted by Jennifer Huffman at Richmond Wellness Center, we had the intimate book signing event I was hoping for. Fifteen at first, and then seventeen people later, joined us as I spoke and then had a worthwhile discussion with group members. A small group offered the opportunity to really catch up.

Then two people showed up randomly who thought that Richmond First Friday was being held at the location. First Friday is an event where artistic and creative shop owners keep their stores open on the first Friday of the month.

These two thought it was an art gallery. … Read more...

When Charles’ depression moved in, his self-esteem moved out

charles aubrey rogers

It was in second grade and I was meeting with Charles’ teacher. He mentioned that my youngest child had a great foundation of self-esteem. He said it would benefit him later in life. He was funny, smart, self-confident although rarely well prepared for class and always slow to get his materials out.

But despite that, his grades were good.

It was around fifth grade that his confidence started to erode and his anxiety started to escalate. The rubber hits the road in fifth grade. A lot is expected of ten years olds and all of the organization required was more … Read more...

What advice do you feel like Charles would give right now?

Question from a high school student after one of my presentations.

That’s a tough one. (For those of you who don’t know, Charles is my son who died by suicide and I often speak to youth about mental health.)

To answer the question, I think he’d say be true to yourself and follow your passion.

Charles asked me once, “Mom are you following your passion?” I hesitated and then he said, “If you are taking that long to answer, you aren’t.

“You should follow your heart,” said the child with the world’s biggest heart.

So I did.

October is National Bullying Prevention month

Most have been bullied in their lifetime at some point including me. And while it is a practice that has existed since there were parents and children, it’s never been as 24/7 as it is these days with social media and texting when humiliation can spread like wildfire on a hot summer day in California.

I was always thankful that Charles was rarely bullied and from early on he understood that bullies had some underlying reason for their actions. I remember his being bullied on the bus at the age of 6 by a much older child which was killing … Read more...

Thank you for one of the ‘strongest launches ever’

Pictures from the launch

Fountain Book store might be local but they do launches for celebrities. It goes to show you what a group of passionate and determined people can do and I’m so grateful. I asked for help and you guys delivered. And because of all of you, it was one of the strongest pre-sale and launches events.

It just hit me today. I wrote a book after my son died. I actually did it. Wrote it, got it published. None of that was easy.
