Fifty thousand dollars!

Markel representative hands NAMI Executive Director, Kathy Harkey a check for $50,000.

I am a board member for NAMI Virginia and newly appointed fundraising chair. I did a panel event about mental health earlier this year, hosted by Markel Corporation employee Deborah and Mary A. Deborah told her mental health story for the first time and it was incredible and brave and her co-workers were in disbelief that the person they see as so together had struggled with addiction and mental health issues.

Later that year, Markel sponsored the NAMI virtual walk. I introduced Portia, one of the staff at NAMI Virginia, to my Markel contact which resulted in a $50k donation to NAMI National, $10k of which will go to NAMI Virginia as was their company policy. So few corporations have the guts to support mental health, going instead for something less stigmatized. During this pandemic, services have been more in demand and more important than ever. We’re so grateful for this generous donation. Thank you Markel Corporation.

  1. Dear Anne,
Thank you for helping so many!
I’m so sorry for your loss. We lost our son to suicide on August 14, 2018. Cannabis Induced Psychosis and mental illness were the main contributors to his death. My wife Hazel is president of NAMI Solano County and I am facilitating two Mar-Anon support zoom meetings each week. As you may know, Mar-Anon is the marijuana version of Al-Anon. I am interested in communicating with you to learn how I can reach as many NAMI affiliates and other similar organizations with my message regarding SUD and mental illness. My email is bartjbright@gmail.com
    Thanks again!

  2. I work for Markel Corporation and read your blog and emails after learning about you through Deborah Brown. I am so proud to see this significant donation from Markel to NAMI.

    1. Thank you for being part of the tribe. I know you are so proud to be with this company. They didn’t string anyone along for months but their support was so fast. Thank you for commenting Kelly.
